CREATING A GARDEN part 1

Image
Creating a garden of  Thai Basil bee-effect.co.za/basil-honey-bees/ Why we need basil in a garden ?  Basil, or  Ocimum basilicum,  is the King of herbs,  honey bees are mad about it, and so are we. Offering small white to light purple flowers with good nectar and pollen – your honey bees will be buzzing about. This gorgeous herb is sensitive to cold and best grown in hot, dry conditions. The white to light purple flowers are arranged in a terminal spike; with an 80% bee factor (meaning there is an 80% reliance on honeybee pollination to get a good fruit or seed set) – honey bees are sure to bring bounty to your fare. Bee-effective and plant these lovely smelling, tasting, looking and nutritious herbs in your garden.  Saving our bees is not just about making less toxic environments for them, but too about focusing on what we feed them.  Like us, they need a balanced diet. Pollen and nectar from a diverse choice of flowers; protein from pollen, and carbohydrates, sugars, from nectar.

KEBUN BUAH-BUAHAN MAK

My mother owns an orchard that she inherited from my grandfather . It is about 6 km from our home. A suburban fruit orchard actually  . Mother also bought another piece of land nearby from her savings . What variety of fruit trees ? Durian , mangosteen , rambutan , ....When it is in season , there will be an abundance of fruits . My mother will sell the durian , rambutan and mangosteen  . Some durian will be fermented and used in cooking or turn into candy . Kami tak pernah beli jam apatah lagi mentega kacang . Semua terasa mahal.

GREEN FINGERS TANGAN  SEJUK Is it true that green fingers grow our plant ? My mak will tell me where to sow the seeds or plant the stem. Why? Simply because each plant  has different need for the amount of sunlight in a day. She is indirectly , teaching me. When the plant thrive , I feel a great sense of achievement . The wow feeling . Do you know where to plant the sweet leaf stem, watercress, taro and turmeric? These plants need about 4-5 hours of sunlight per day. "Yus, my bougainvillae musn't be in the shade . It needs a lot of sunlight to bloom." "Yus, sow the chilli seeds in the can contai

THE PASSION, THE BEGINNING MINAT SAYA , PERMULAANNYA How did I find the passion in gardening ? How did I start ? Through my mother (mak). She  is the 'silent '  gen .The atrocities of World War 2 , is so embedded in her . When I was in primary 2 , I asked her , "Mak , why do you keep so many bottles of salt in the kitchen cupboard ?" "Yus , we always have to be prepared for time of emergencies. During the Japanese occupation we ate tapioca with salt . As a matter of fact ,we can eat any food with salt because it gives flavour to our bland food. Furthermore it is easily available  and affordable." "Yus , go sow this papaya seed." "Yus, after you cut the dried chilies don't throw the seeds . Sow it in the can under the guava tree. "  "Yus, cut the remaining stem  of the sweets leaf / cekur manis about 6 inches. Go plant it in the ground under the papaya tree. " "Yus ,your dad /abah is a goverment servant . His
